SATENA reopens the air route between Bogotá and La Macarena for the Caño Cristales tourist season

Bogotá, march de 2026

With the start of a new tourist season in the region of La Macarena, in the department of Meta, SATENA, the airline of Colombians, announced the reopening of the air route Bogotá – La Macarena – Bogotá, a key connection to facilitate access to one of the most visited natural ecosystems in the country.

The operation will take place from June 5 to November 15, 2026, a period in which the highest flow of travelers to this municipality in southern Meta is concentrated, internationally recognized for housing Caño Cristales, considered one of the most beautiful rivers in the world due to its unique natural coloration.

"La Macarena is an emblematic territory for nature tourism in Colombia. With this operation, we seek to facilitate access to the region during the high season and continue fulfilling our mission of connecting areas of the country where air transport is fundamental for local development," stated Major General Óscar Zuluaga Castaño, president of SATENA.

Flights will be scheduled three times a week: Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, strengthening connectivity between the country's capital and this area of the Sierra de La Macarena National Natural Park, where land access remains limited.

The operation will be carried out in ATR 42 aircraft, with itineraries that will allow travel from Bogotá to La Macarena in the morning and return to the capital on the same day, facilitating the planning of visits during the tourist season.

Additionally, SATENA maintains air operations between Villavicencio and La Macarena, with flights on Mondays and Fridays, a permanent route enabled since 2023 with the purpose of strengthening regional connectivity and boosting the territory's economy. This connection has boosted tourism to a region characterized by its extraordinary natural wealth, where savanna, jungle, and river ecosystems converge, along with a wide diversity of fauna and flora that make La Macarena a privileged destination for nature tourism, bird watching, and ecotourism.

The airline informed that fares for this route start from $323,700 for the Bogotá–La Macarena leg and from $314,000 for the return flight, with the objective of encouraging the arrival of visitors to this natural destination during the Caño Cristales season.

In recent years, La Macarena has consolidated itself as one of the main nature tourism destinations in Colombia. Each season it receives visitors interested in touring Caño Cristales and exploring other ecosystems in the region, characterized by their high biodiversity and their strategic role within the ecological corridor that connects the Amazon, the Orinoco, and the Andes.

In this context, air connectivity becomes an important element for the economic development of the territory, by facilitating the arrival of visitors and strengthening tourism activities that generate income for local communities.

"Air connectivity is a determining factor for territories like La Macarena to take advantage of their tourism potential. At SATENA, we continue working to bring these regions closer to the rest of the country and contribute to the social and economic development of their communities," added Zuluaga Castaño.

With this reopening that takes place every year, SATENA reinforces its role as the airline that connects strategic destinations in the country, especially those where geographic conditions make air transport the main mobility alternative.

The operation of this route will support the Caño Cristales tourist season and strengthen the integration of one of Colombia's most emblematic natural territories with the rest of the country.
